Costa BridgeSpain Relocation Preparation

Areas

Lloret de Mar

The Costa Brava's largest and most famous resort town — high-density tourism, good Barcelona transport links, and a large foreign-resident population that swells dramatically in summer.

Lloret de Mar is the Costa Brava's most recognised name — a sprawling resort municipality of 48 km² that has evolved from a 1960s package-tourism destination into a town with genuine year-round residents. It remains intensely seasonal: the registered population of ~42,000 is dwarfed by a summer influx that pushes the town well past 200,000.

For British relocation planners, Lloret offers something rare on the northern Costa Brava: scale. It has a hospital, large supermarkets, a full range of services and the best transport links of any Brava town south of Girona. Renfe's Rodalies R1 line reaches Blanes, with frequent bus connections onward. Girona–Costa Brava Airport is 30 minutes away.

The town divides opinion. Its 1960s and 70s high-rise legacy is visible, and the summer density is extreme. Yet it has genuine residential pockets, an established foreign community and — by Catalan coast standards — relatively affordable property. It is not chic, but it is practical.

Who this town suits

FamiliesModerate

Large beaches, activities, water parks. Very crowded in summer. Schools are Catalan/Spanish.

RetireesModerate

Good healthcare access, mild climate. But very busy in summer and quieter in winter than Torrevieja-type resorts.

Remote workersModerate

Good broadband in town. Summer noise and crowds may disrupt concentration.

Second-home ownersGood

Strong rental market in July–August. Established property management. Easy airport access.

Holiday-rental investorsGood

High demand but also high competition. HUT licence required under Catalan law.

Nightlife seekersGood

Known for bars and clubs — though this reputation is more relevant to short-stay tourists than residents.

Geography and access

  • Coastal town in southern Girona province, on the Costa Brava roughly 40 km north of Barcelona.
  • Girona–Costa Brava Airport ~30 km; Barcelona El Prat ~92 km.
  • No direct train. Renfe Rodalies R1 connects Barcelona to Blanes; bus or taxi from Blanes to Lloret (~10 min).
  • AP-7 motorway access. Good road links to Girona and France.

Local services

Healthcare

Hospital de Palamós (~20 km). CAP (primary care centre) in Lloret. Private clinics available.

Schools

Public primary/secondary (Catalan/Spanish). No British international school in town — nearest in Girona or Barcelona area.

Shopping

Extensive retail, large supermarkets, weekly markets. Tourist-oriented shops dominate the centre.

Admin

Padrón at Lloret town hall. Extranjería in Girona or Barcelona. Gestor services available.

British community

Small compared to Alicante or Málaga provinces. The 2021 census recorded only ~240 British nationals in Lloret de Mar — a fraction of the French, Dutch and Belgian populations. The international summer crowd is transient, not residential. English-speaking services exist but are far less established than on the southern costas.

Local admin notes

    Important notes and caveats

    • Population: ~41,900 (citypopulation.de 2025 estimate). Summer population can exceed 200,000.
    • British nationals: ~240 (2021 census — very low).
    • This is NOT a traditional British relocation destination. Foreign buyers are predominantly French, Belgian, Dutch and Swiss.
    • Catalan is strong; Spanish understood. English less common in daily life than on Costa Blanca.
    • HUT (Habitatge d'Ús Turístic) licence required for short-term rental under Catalan law.
    • **Costa Brava research is based on desk research and official sources, not lived experience.** Costa Bridge has deeper on-the-ground knowledge of Terres de l'Ebre and Costa Dorada. Treat Brava guidance as informed but not field-tested.
