Areas

Salou

A lively, family-focused resort town with excellent beaches and PortAventura on the doorstep.

Salou is the best-known town on the Costa Dorada and the region's primary tourist destination. Its long, crescent-shaped beach (Llevant) and the neighbouring Ponent bay give it a genuine coastal resort character.

For British relocation planners, Salou is distinctive because it is a resort town that functions year-round, not just in summer. The permanent population is around 29,500, and while the summer season brings a huge influx of visitors, the town does not shut down in winter in the way some smaller resorts do.

PortAventura World — one of Europe's largest theme park resorts — is effectively part of Salou, employing thousands and driving year-round economic activity. This creates a different property and rental market from purely seasonal towns.

Who this town suits

FamiliesExcellent

Safe sandy beaches, PortAventura, water parks, English-speaking summer services, well-developed infrastructure.

RetireesGood

Good healthcare access via Tarragona, year-round services, active social scene. Summer crowds may be overwhelming.

Remote workersModerate

Good broadband, co-working spaces in Tarragona. Resort atmosphere may not suit everyone.

Second-home ownersExcellent

Strong rental demand in season, good transport links, established property management infrastructure.

Holiday-rental investorsGood

High seasonal demand but also competition. Must comply with Catalonia's tourist rental regulations (zona tensionada in some areas).

Geography and access

  • Coastal position on the Costa Dorada, approximately 110 km south-west of Barcelona.
  • Direct AP-7 motorway access. Renfe Regional train to Barcelona (~1h 30min), Tarragona (~15 min), Valencia (~2h 30min).
  • Reus Airport handles seasonal and some year-round international flights — notably UK routes in summer.

Local services

Healthcare

CAP (primary care centre) in Salou. Hospital care via Tarragona (Hospital Joan XXIII, ~15 km).

Schools

Public schools (Catalan/Spanish). Some private options. No confirmed English-medium schools in Salou itself.

Shopping

Good retail and supermarkets. Major shopping centres in Tarragona and Reus.

Admin

Padrón at Ajuntament de Salou. NIE/TIE via National Police in Tarragona or Reus (not local).

British community

Moderate. Salou has the highest concentration of UK nationals in Tarragona province (331 registered UK nationals, 2022 padrón data). British presence is visible but Salou remains predominantly Spanish/Catalan. English-speaking services exist in summer but thin out in winter.

Property and rental signal

Active market with a mix of apartments and villas. Purchase prices higher than inland Terres de l'Ebre but more affordable than Barcelona or Costa Blanca prime areas. Strong seasonal rental demand. Check zona tensionada status before considering tourist rental.

Local admin notes

  • Padrón: Register at Ajuntament de Salou. Appointment usually required online.
  • NIE/TIE: Nearest National Police extranjería office is in Tarragona or Reus — not Salou itself.
  • Healthcare: Register at CAP after padrón. Public system via Catalan CatSalut.
  • Language: Catalan dominant in administration and public signage. Spanish widely spoken.

Important notes and caveats

  • Population: 29,578 (Ajuntament de Salou, 2025). Seasonal population much higher.
  • UK nationals: 331 registered (INE padrón, 2022). This is the most recent municipal-level data available.
  • Tourist rental regulation: Catalonia's zona tensionada rules may apply. Verify current status before any rental decision.
  • Costa Bridge provides preparation support, not property management or rental advice.
  • Population and community figures are drawn from the latest available official sources. They change year to year and do not reflect unregistered residents or second-home owners.
