Cuevas del Almanzora
A historic inland market town of 15,000 with a cave-dwelling heritage, traditional Spanish life and some of the cheapest property on the Costa de Almería.
Cuevas del Almanzora is a historic town on the Almanzora river, roughly 15 km inland from the coast and 20 km north of the resort towns of Mojácar and Vera. Its name references the cave dwellings (cuevas) that have been inhabited in the area since prehistory, and the town retains a strong sense of traditional Almerían character.
With over 15,000 residents, Cuevas del Almanzora is the largest inland town in the eastern Almería area. It functions as a local service centre for the surrounding agricultural and almond-growing villages, with a busy weekly market, retail strips and administrative offices that draw people from across the valley.
For British relocation planners, Cuevas del Almanzora is the budget-friendly, inland alternative to the coastal resorts. Property is among the cheapest in the province, the pace of life is slower and more Spanish, and the town has genuine year-round activity — but buyers must accept that the beach is a 15–20 minute drive and English is rarely spoken.
