Areas

Costa de Almería

Spain's driest, warmest coast — unspoiled beaches, desert landscapes, film history and some of the best-value property on the Mediterranean. The British presence is smaller than the Costa del Sol but growing fast.

The Costa de Almería is the driest and warmest coast in mainland Spain — a stretch of Mediterranean shoreline backed by Europe's only true desert, the Tabernas. It is sunnier than the Costa del Sol, less developed, and significantly cheaper.

For British relocation planners, the Costa de Almería represents a value play. Property prices are roughly half those of Málaga province. The climate is warmer and drier in winter. The scenery is dramatic — volcanic hills, desert badlands, and long sandy beaches that have featured in Hollywood films from Lawrence of Arabia to Indiana Jones.

The trade-off is infrastructure. There is no coastal train. English is less widely spoken than on the Costa del Sol. Healthcare and some specialist services require travel to Almería city. This is a coast for people who want sun, space and affordability more than convenience and British social life.

British community

Small but growing. Significantly smaller than Costa del Sol but increasing as prices rise in Málaga. Mojácar has the largest British community, Roquetas de Mar has year-round Spanish residents, and Vera attracts retirees seeking value.

Towns on the Costa de Almería

Mojácar

Spain's most famous Almería hill village — whitewashed pueblo, long sandy beach, and one of the oldest British communities on the Costa de Almería.
