Roquetas de Mar
Almería's second-largest municipality — a working Spanish town of 100,000+ with full services, a hospital, theatre and genuine year-round life rather than an expat enclave.
Roquetas de Mar is the largest town on the Costa de Almería and one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Spain. With over 111,000 residents, it is a genuine working town rather than a tourist resort — and that distinction matters for relocation planners looking for everyday Spanish infrastructure and services.
The town has a large urbanización (tourist hotel and apartment zone) that fills with Spanish holidaymakers in summer, but the permanent town behind it operates year-round. There is a hospital, a theatre, sports complexes, extensive retail and all the administrative services of a provincial-scale municipality.
For British relocation planners, Roquetas de Mar is the pragmatic choice. It is not an expat enclave — English is not widely spoken in daily life — but it offers reliable healthcare, major supermarkets, property at lower prices than the Costa del Sol, and a climate that is among the warmest and driest in Europe.
Who this town suits
Full services, hospital, sports facilities, schools, safe beaches. Spanish-language environment.
Excellent infrastructure, warm climate, affordable property, but less English support than Mojácar.
Good broadband, lower cost of living; fewer English-speaking peers and social groups.
Spanish-dominated summer rental market; less British demand than Mojácar or Vera.
High summer demand from Spanish tourists, but lower UK rental premiums. VFT licence required.
Genuine Spanish working town with limited expat infrastructure — ideal for those who want immersion.

British community
Small relative to the town's size. English is spoken in some hotels and tourist businesses, but day-to-day life is conducted in Spanish.
Property and rental signal
More affordable than Mojácar and comparable to other Costa de Almería towns. Apartments from ~€80,000. Villas and townhouses from ~€130,000. The property market is larger and more liquid than in the smaller coastal towns due to the municipality's size. Spanish buyers dominate. VFT licence required for tourist rental. ~€1,200–1,600/m² for apartments.
